Display firstname and name in BuddyPress and sort by name
The projects I’m working on are mainly corporate sites. Members are not displaying a nickname but their name and firstname. By default in BuddyPress, the alphabetical members directory sorts members by the first letter of their nickname. I wanted to display members with their firstname and name and sort them out by name.
The BuddyPress Real Names plugin saved me hours of development. It needs three fields : name, firstname and fullname which will be a hidden field and will be used for sorting. In the plugin options, you can indicate if you want to sort by name or firstname and if you prefer displaying the nickname or both firstname and name.
Here is the members directory. When clicking on F, my name being Faulkner, you can see my profile which show my firstname first.

If Benoît Gréant hadn’t developed this plugin, I would have had to do it. The plugin works very well, apart from small bugs I reported which occur in very specific situations, but Benoît is fixing them quickly.
You can visit the BuddyPress Real Names plugin homepage and download it on the WordPress repository.
Thanks Benoît for this plugin which will certainly be useful to many users.
